Pedestrian still in hospital after wreck

William Q. Martin Jr., a 53-year-old Lawrence man who was struck by a truck Tuesday afternoon, remains at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka, but his condition is still unavailable.

According to a hospital official, Martin’s family requested his condition not be released to the public.

Martin was transported by air ambulance to the hospital after being hit by a truck near the intersection of U.S. Highway 24-59 and North 1900 Road.

Before the accident occurred, a sheriff’s deputy had responded to a call from a Lawrence resident who witnessed Martin walking on North 1900 Road. Lt. John Eichkorn of the Kansas Highway Patrol said minutes after the deputy arrived on scene, he called to report the pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle.

Glenn Wise, of Baldwin City, said he was driving south on U.S. 24-59 when he swerved to miss the pedestrian. He said the vehicle behind him struck the man.
