New building codes OK’d

The city will have a new set of building codes come Jan. 1.

City commissioners on a 3-2 vote agreed to adopt building and fire codes from the International Codes council.

The new codes will require all new apartment complexes of three units or more to have fire sprinkler systems. It will not require existing apartment complexes to retrofit apartments for fire sprinklers.

The code also prohibits the use of open-flame grills on wooden decks in apartment complexes. It does not prohibit the use of grills on the wooden decks of single-family homes.

Also, the codes create new standards for energy efficiency for new homes.

Commissioners Mike Amyx and Rob Chestnut both voted against adopting the codes. Amyx said he was concerned that the city was abandoning some codes that had been working well.
