Pipe bomb detonates in state senator’s field

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers are investigating the detonation of a pipe bomb in a field northeast of Lawrence.

Officers responded at 6:40 p.m. Thursday to the 1700 block of East 1500 Road, where witnesses told them they had heard a noise and then found what appeared to be a pipe bomb, Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said.

The field belongs to state Sen. Roger Pine, R-Lawrence, Hornberger said. The device was not near any houses.

A bomb squad from Overland Park confirmed the device was a pipe bomb. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was notified as standard procedure, Hornberger said. The incident is under investigation.
