Historic commission denies hotel plan

The Lawrence Historic Resources Commission denied a developer’s application for a proposed seven-story building at 12th Street and Oread Avenue at its Thursday meeting at City Hall.

Scott McCullough, the city planning director, said the commission denied the application on findings that it encroached the environs of the Hancock Historic District, Oread Historic District and the Snow House Historic Property.

He said the findings are based on height scale, massing and proportion of the hotel relative to environs.

The project – proposed by a development team led by members of the Fritzel family – would include 74 upscale hotel rooms and a mix of condominiums.

The 0.75-acre site had been the longtime home of Yello Sub, The Crossing bar, a burrito shop, a bookstore, a fourplex rental unit at 1142 Ind. and an apartment building at 1140 Ind. All the buildings would be demolished to make way for the project.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission is scheduled to review the plan for the project at its 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday at City Hall. City commissioners ultimately will decide whether to give the project final approval.
