Misstep

To the editor:

For safety sake, please, the little platform at the top of a stepladder is not a step. I had to stop reading Sunday’s edition of the Journal-World to comment on a picture. Page 1B, in the Senior Services article, shows a picture of a man standing on the very top platform of a stepladder, painting. This little platform is a hinge point for the legs and, when absolutely necessary, a level spot for a tool. Never a step for feet.

I’m certainly no OSHA expert, but I expect that D.A.D. Painting was violating regulations with the painter’s actions. Had an accident occurred, I doubt that only D.A.D. Painting would have been held at fault as no one apparently took action to correct this issue. Picture the plaintiff in a wheelchair and, at the defendant’s table, D.A.D and the Senior Center administration.

Nearly all accidents can be prevented. Hopefully, the painter kept his balance and did not have an accident and is home with his family. Please use tools as intended and designed. Live long and healthy.

Alan Johnson,
