Police sorting out details of fight at Club Axis

Lawrence police are investigating a fight early Sunday morning at a central Lawrence nightclub where at least one person was injured.

“We’re still trying to piece it together,” said Sgt. Richard Nickell, a police spokesman. “A lot of different officers up there talked to different people.”

Police said a 23-year-old Lawrence man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later flown to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., where he was being treated for a head injury.

Officers were called to the report of a fight around 1 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Club Axis, 821 Iowa. Police did not release much information Sunday, but Nickell said the disturbance involved several employees of the club and patrons.

The injured man was a patron, police said.

Nickell said the scene involved confusion and impaired people.

Officers had made no arrests Sunday. Nickell said officers were still trying to sort out different accounts and that they welcomed any possible witnesses to call police at 832-7509 or 843-TIPS.

Club Axis opened earlier this year. It is at the site of the former Moon Bar, where former Kansas University basketball player J.R. Giddens was cut in a melee outside the building in May 2005.
