Report: Wake jumping caused boat accident

? “Wake jumping” led to the boating accident that killed a man last month at Perry Lake, according to the completed investigative report by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

Wake jumping occurs when a personal watercraft follows too closely in the path of a larger boat and jumps the wake left by the boat.

“This is extremely dangerous due to the fact that the personal watercraft is often not visible by other vessels in the area,” KDWP officer Kevin DeFisher said in a statement.

DeFisher was among investigators into the Aug. 25 accident and death of Rafael Estrada, 50, of Topeka. The accident occurred in the Rock Creek arm of the lake.

Estrada was driving a Yamaha personal watercraft, or jet ski, when it and a 21-foot Regal pleasure boat, also operated by a Topeka resident, collided, according to KDWP.
