Overland Park ? Free State finished 3-0 and Lawrence High 1-2 at the Shawnee Mission North quadrangular on Thursday night.

The Firebirds defeated the Lions, 25-18, 25-18, before downing Olathe North, 25-12, 25-4, and SM North, 25-14, 25-13.

Free State head coach Nancy Hopkins was pleased with her team’s performance on opening night.

“All the things we’ve been working on like passing and defense are some of the things we did very well tonight,” Hopkins said. “They played very consistent, and starting out the season like that, I couldn’t ask for more.”

Lawrence lost to SM North in three games, 25-23, 15-25, 16-25, but came back to beat Olathe North, 25-19, 25-23.

Rachel Van Horn led the Lions with 48 assists. Taylor Tolefree had 19 kills, and Emily Braccianno paced the team with 17 digs.

Kate Melton had 14 kills and 13 digs, and Lindsey Murray finished with 14 kills and 16 digs.
