Lenexa ? Lawrence High’s gymnastics team placed second and Free State fourth at the season-opening Shawnee Mission East Invitational.

Mallory West of LHS placed first in the all-around. Maria Carvajal of LHS and Amelia Firns-Hubert of Free State notched fourth and sixth respectively.

West was first on the beam, second on the bars, third in the vault and fifth in floor exercise. Firns-Hubert placed third and Rachel Rasmussen of LHS sixth on the bars. Carvajal was third on the beam.

“We always consider the first one to be that learning block, to step out and see where we are and what we need to do differently, what we need to work on,” coach Kathy Johnson said. “They did well.”
