Seabury excels

To the editor:

“Lawrence SAT scores beat nation’s” read Wednesday’s headline. Hooray for Lawrence schools in their competition for academic achievements. The SAT scores reflect dedication from teachers and staff in helping our students with critical core education.

I couldn’t help but notice that the article didn’t merit the type of headline that “beating the nation” in a sport-related event might. Furthermore, I thought that since Bishop Seabury Academy scores far surpassed the nation’s, as well as the city’s public high schools, it should have gotten the headline or at least mentioned first, not as an afterthought in the middle of the article.

A college prep school should outperform the public schools for many reasons. On the other hand, they would not be expected to outperform the public high schools in sporting events. Bishop Seabury gets a great deal of sports coverage, considering their small enrollment, but will rarely grab the headlines for achievements in that arena. Academics is where we hope to merit the bold print when it is deserved.
