Library move

To the editor:

From the Journal-World of Aug. 29, (“City Commission to send second letter regarding move”), I gather that the current proposal is for the public library to move to the space presently occupied by the post office at Seventh and Vermont, while the post office is to find itself another, as yet unknown, location downtown, but outsource its retail operations.

It seems that once the library has moved, the local construction firms will develop the previous library area, presumably into one or several multistory buildings for business and apartments. It appears that this project is driving the whole issue of moving the public library and the post office.

Do we really want to see a row of multistory buildings on the 700 block of Vermont? Would the library gain any extra room by moving to the present post office space? In my view the best solution might be expanding the public library on its present site by adding new levels, but if that is not feasible, the construction of a new building on the present post office site.
