Child draws interest in coloring contest

Mika Gillman is getting plenty of interest for her drawing, above, submitted as part of a coloring contest involving KU Credit Union’s Johnny Appleseed Savings and Ecology Club, which teaches children about money and the value of savings.

Mika, a 6-year-old Lawrence resident, received a butterfly pavilion for winning the contest through KU Credit Union. Her drawing now will be entered in the national Johnny Appleseed contest, going up against entries from more than 70 other participating financial institutions; 12 national winners each will receive $50 and have their entries featured in the 2008 Johnny Appleseed Junior Ecology Club calendar.

The club is for children ages 12 and younger, who are rewarded with a prize every other month for bringing in at least a $2 deposit for their own account. Such accounts can be started with as little as $5.
