Lions, Firebirds both qualify for state meet

? Lawrence High missed out on a regional championship by 1.28 points, and Free State High finished fourth by less than four points.

The results meant that both city schools qualified for next weekend’s 6A state gymnastics meet in Hutchinson.

LHS, which saw senior Mallory West miss out on the all-around title by .4 points, also got strong showings from Leighenn Krische, Maria Carvajal and Rachel Rasmussen to finish second in the overall team standings.

Free State, meanwhile, benefited from an outstanding day from Drue Davis, who finished as the regional champion in both the vault and floor exercise.

Davis won the vault with a score of 9.2 and the floor exercise with a 9.0.

She placed third in the all-around competition.

Free State, which grabbed the final qualifying spot also got good days from Kelcy Bowers, Amelia Firns-Hubert and Tawney Carter.
