SJHS teacher receives Legacy Award

Roger Clouser, a South Junior High School social studies teacher, was presented a Legacy Award this week from the Lawrence Education Association and the KU Credit Union.

“The award acknowledges outstanding educators who work tirelessly to assure student success,” Solis said.

Presentation of Clouser’s award, which was for September, was made at the school in front of the South staff.

“He challenges and frustrates and demands and makes them (students) grow,” Kirsten Flory, of KU Credit Union, told the audience.

She said the nominations, which were made mostly by former students, included such accolades as “he has a heart for kids,” and “he was one of the two best and most memorable teachers.”

Another nomination, Flory said, described Clouser as a teacher who “goes beyond the normal curriculum and teaches life lessons.”

Clouser has taught civics and social studies at South since 1981 and holds a doctorate from Kansas University.
