Emporia ? Free State High’s volleyball team went 3-3 on Saturday at the Emporia Invitational.

The Firebirds lost to Emporia 23-25, 25-27, then defeated Washburn Rural, 26-24, 25-19; defeated Topeka West, 25-17, 25-10; lost to Topeka Seaman, 25-27, 11-25; lost to SM West, 25-27, 23-25; and defeated SM Northwest, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18.

“It wasn’t our best outing,” coach Nancy Hopkins said. “We played really well against Washburn Rural, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A. We didn’t play well all day long, just in spurts. We’re coming up to sub-state next weekend. Hopefully we’ll get it together.”

FSHS, 19-15, will play host to Topeka High, Tonganoxie and BV West on Tuesday.
