Changing world

To the editor:

Suppose that the world population stabilizes and the demand on social and environmental resources lessens. The environment begins to improve, relieving us of catastrophic planetary concerns for our children and grandchildren. Even Lawrence, Kansas, stops growing. What then?

What will our chamber of commerce do? “Development” done in the same old way we’ve done for years (new sprawl) won’t work to generate revenue for our city because we won’t need it. What then?

Given population stabilization, surely city planners and the chamber of commerce have some other ideas. Let’s look to the future and anticipate a better community and a better world.

What now?
