Celebration of life to honor philanthropist
A celebration of the life of volunteer and philanthropist Hortense Casady “Tensie” Oldfather has been set for next week.
Oldfather, 88, died Tuesday at a Kansas City, Mo., hospice. She had lived in Lawrence since 1950, when her husband, the late Charles Oldfather, joined the faculty of the Kansas University School of Law.
She was a longtime volunteer in the Lawrence community – and a benefactor for numerous area groups, including Kansas University, Topeka Civic Theater, KANU, Reading Services for the Blind, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, the American Friends Service Committee and the ACLU.
In 2000, she provided the seed money to establish the Douglas County Community Foundation. Her family suggests memorial contributions to the foundation.
A service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass.
