Tax relief for seniors identified as interest

Property tax relief for senior citizens is an issue that city commissioners may spend some time advocating for in Topeka this legislative session.

Commissioner Mike Amyx proposed that the city lobby state legislators for some sort of system that would allow senior citizens to receive a rebate on their property taxes if they meet certain qualifications.

The idea came up as staff members at Tuesday night’s commission meeting asked for issues that the city should include in its annual legislative policy statement that is delivered to area lawmakers.

Commissioners took no action on the legislative policy statement. City Manager David Corliss is expected to create a draft statement for commissioners to review at their Dec. 11 meeting.
