Health Department offers flu shots

If you still need to get a flu shot, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department will be giving immunizations during a special clinic Thursday.

The clinic will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the health department, 200 Maine. The shots cost $18 for children up to age 3 and $23 for anyone older. No one will be denied service because of an inability to pay.

Clients eligible for Medicare Part B, HealthWave, Medicaid and Blue Cross/Blue Shield can receive the shot at no charge if they take their cards to the clinic. The health department also is providing flu shots during its regular business hours.

Flu cases are not generally reported to local or state health departments, but a spokesman at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said there was no indication of any major outbreak of the flu. The peak of the flu season is usually in January.

More flu vaccine is available this year than ever before, health officials say. They especially encourage shots for children between 6 months and 5 years old; people older than 50; pregnant women; and people with chronic health problems.
