Early education advocates honored
The Lawrence Schools Foundation will honor advocates for Lawrence children during a reception Thursday at the East Heights Early Childhood Family Center, 1430 Haskell Ave.
The foundation will unveil a Wall of Honor and its first plaque dedicated to The Children’s Hour Inc., a cooperative effort of several Lawrence mothers that began in 1964 and helped make preschool a reality for at-risk children. Through their efforts, the first Head Start program in Kansas began.
The foundation will add to the wall each year. The foundation conducts the ceremonies each year because of the support of benefactor William Dann, who has donated more than $450,000 to the early childhood “Readiness” program since 1998.
The new Wall of Honor will recognize advocates chosen by Dann.
The New Generation Society of Lawrence will also be recognized as the 2007 Friends of Early Childhood Education. The public is invited to the dedication at 9:30 a.m., and a reception and tour will follow.
