Cold weather clothing to be given away this weekend

More than 2,000 coats will be available for the taking Friday and Saturday.

The 21st annual Scotch Share the Warmth giveaway is set for 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The jackets will be distributed in Scotch Plaza at Sixth and Florida streets.

“It’s a way for our company to serve the community doing what we do best, which is cleaning coats,” Scotch Industries President Scott Shmalberg said.

Scotch Fabric Care collects donated coats at its Lawrence and Topeka locations in the fall. Each coat is dry-cleaned. The Salvation Army aids in the coat distribution.

More than 160,000 coats have been distributed in Lawrence and Topeka since the program began.

“In Lawrence, we normally shoot for around 2,000 coats each year,” Shmalberg said. “We will exceed that this year. We’ve already cleaned 2,000 and we’re still cleaning.”

Recipients do not have to qualify for the giveaway or fill out paperwork.

“Anyone who is in need of a coat, we encourage them to come on down and pick one out,” Shmalberg said.

In past years, the line for coats has formed before the doors open in the morning, Salvation Army Lt. Wes Dalberg said.

Dalberg said the program in years past has distributed a wide variety of coats – from Kansas University jackets to Kansas City Chiefs coats to brand new donations.

Dalberg said as the temperatures drop, the need will grow. He said the agency has been fielding calls from people who don’t want to miss the giveaway.

“I think the need is going to be as great or greater than it has been in the past several years,” he said.
