On the hook

To the editor:

I agree with your Nov. 21 editorial, “Driven by dollars,” concerning the unwise decision to move the MU-KU football game to Arrowhead. No matter how much the athletic department is now “spinning” this act, I am convinced that Lew Perkins would have kept the game in Lawrence had he known before the season started that Kansas University could be playing for a slot in the National Championship game. Ironic, isn’t it, that the athletic director had no confidence in the football team.

That said, there will be no one rooting harder for KU this Saturday than Perkins, because he knows, and all of the KU fans know, that the home field advantage in our Memorial Stadium could tilt the outcome of a close game in KU’s favor. If KU loses by a small margin (less than seven points) at Arrowhead, KU fans will justifiably blame Perkins and forever remember his perfidy. Of course, I hope KU emerges victorious even though a victory would take Perkins off the hook, at least temporarily.

Mike Elder,
