City commission briefs

North Lawrence rezoning approved

Commissioners agreed to rezone a pair of North Lawrence properties so that they can potentially be redeveloped by the city’s Harley-Davidson dealership.

Commissioner approved rezoning 612 and 616 N. Second St. from General Industrial to Strip Commercial. The properties are just north of the Harley-Davidson dealership. The properties include a vacant transmission shop and a car wash.

Commissioners were fine with the rezoning but said they would be interested to see the site plan for the property.

Several commissioners said they would want to eliminate some of the access points the property has onto North Second Street.

They’re concerned a large number of access points in the area could create traffic safety issues.

City commissioners approved the rezoning on a 4-0 vote. City Commissioner Mike Dever was absent from the meeting.

Game to be shown on really big ‘screen’

The party is on.

City commissioners approved plans by Downtown Lawrence Inc. to put on an outdoor watch party for the upcoming Kansas-Missouri football game.

The event will start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Ninth and New Hampshire streets. The party will take place in a vacant lot just north of the city’s parking garage. Plans call for the game to be projected onto the parking garage wall. It is expected that the television image will be about 50 feet wide.

The city’s approval will allow beer and food to be sold as part of the event. Commissioners approved the party on a 4-0 vote.
