Sink or swim

To the editor:

Nancy Thellman’s brilliant “Take a Stand” letter (Public Forum, Aug. 5) regarding commercial development in the North Lawrence flood plain is absolutely correct!

City commissioners asking taxpayers to finance a potential disaster is preposterous. This Kaw Valley area was under 12 feet of water in 1951, and it nearly happened again in 1993. Flood control lakes are silting in and becoming less effective.

Remember Murphy’s law: If it can happen, it will.

I don’t recall any city commissioner running on a platform of “taxpayer subsidy for commercial development in a flood plain.”

Expenditures of this (foolish) nature should either be rejected, or voter approved.
