Satellite libraries

To the editor:

When I lived in Boulder, Colo., there were satellite libraries in residential areas. I often used the very comfortable new library in the south part of Boulder. The financing for it was donated by (and named for) a retired university professor. It had four computers and many books, magazines, newspapers and videos.

If I wanted an item from the main library, it took a day or less to get it. It was a basic library with no frills or special amenities but was quite sufficient and used by many people, old and young. It would be great if Lawrence had a housing developer or group of civic-minded individuals to join in raising private funds to build a couple of satellite libraries in Lawrence.

It could be kept private or later given to the city for an adjunct library.

Surely there are unused buildings, churches or empty business spaces that could be used for such a worthwhile venture.
