A 57-year-old man involved in a standoff with officers at his rural Douglas County property now faces criminal charges stemming from the 10-hour ordeal.

Darrel Maley appeared before Douglas County District Court Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel on Thursday afternoon on a video feed from the Douglas County Jail.

Prosecutors have charged Maley with one count of arson, accusing him of burning property that Pam Maley also had an interest in.

The standoff Nov. 9 on Maley’s property near Pleasant Grove ended with a house and outbuilding on fire. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released few details about the incident but said officers were called to the home in the 600 block of East 1375 Road to check on a distraught individual.

Maley reportedly kept officers at bay with a shotgun for 10 hours before flames erupted. Officers then took him into custody. They said he did not go willingly. He was transferred to a Kansas City hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Maley was booked Wednesday into the Douglas County Jail.

Maley’s attorney asked the judge to reduce his client’s bond from $150,000 to $75,000. The attorney, Hatem Chahine, said Maley is in a psychiatrist’s care and must continue taking medication. Chahine said Maley has had no criminal record for more than 20 years and has a business in Lawrence. Prosecutors opposed the reduction, saying Maley knew what he was doing, going as far as to paint a message on his property warning firefighters to keep out. Prosecutors also said Maley considered the home his wife’s property.

Kittel denied the request to reduce the bond and ordered Maley to appear again in court Nov. 27 to set a preliminary hearing in the case.
