Bad preview
To the editor:
This is in response to your Nov. 12 article on the “Bee Movie.”
I took my 5-year-old daughter to see that movie at our local Hollywood Theatres. Although the movie was great, I was appalled at the theater’s choice to show a four-minute long music video (actually a U.S. military recruitment advertisement) as part of the previews. Here is the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=982tT4qQZJE
I was squirming in my seat while my impressionable and wide-eyed preschooler asked me “Why are those men so scary with their guns? Who are they gonna shoot? Why are they so scary? Is that boy dead?” Needless to say, I was not prepared to have this conversation with my young child on that relaxing Saturday afternoon.
I support our troops. I understand that we are, at the least, shorthanded in our efforts to “fight terror.” Furthermore, I have no problems with this advertisement or its message as I am certain that it serves its purpose well. Instead, I am disturbed by the time and place that Hollywood Theatres chose to show this video.
I am confident that theater management would assure me that this preview is rated PG (same rating of “Bee Movie”); however, with the average age of the audience – that day it was probably about 7 years old (not including the parental chaperones) – the content of this video was totally inappropriate.
I hope that Hollywood Theatres will reconsider their choice in this matter.
