Standoff ends with arrest, fires

A deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department ropes off East 1375 Road south of Lawrence. Deputies secured a wide perimeter, rerouting local traffic.

A 10-hour standoff in rural Douglas County ended Friday night when sheriff’s deputies took the man into custody – but with the fires blazing at house and barn where he had kept authorities at bay.

The resolution to the standoff came around 11 p.m. The fires were under control by early Saturday morning, though one structure had reportedly suffered a partial collapse.

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies had spent the day surrounding the residence south of Lawrence, east of Pleasant Grove Hill. Several area township fire departments have been called to standby for service.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Kari Wempe said officials received a call around 1 p.m. about a situation at the residence. She said deputies are in contact with an individual at the residence.

“We are trying to work with him and figure out how to help him,” Wempe said at mid-afternoon.

Further details were unavailable.

Deputies blocked access to East 1375 Road from County Road 460. The Kansas Highway Patrol was also on scene, with crews from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical and Willow Springs Township Fire Department waiting nearby.

More details as they develop.
