A misnomer?

To the editor:

What’s in a name? I have noticed that public documents and the Lawrence Journal-World consistently use the name Airport Business Park to identify the proposed Pine-Santaularia farmland conversion project north of Lawrence. While I suspect that this name was quite deliberately chosen by the developer, I think it misleads the taxpayers who are going to be asked to fund the infrastructure to support this project.

This project has nothing to do with the airport. The airport has its own business development and its own plans for expansion on airport property. The airport has been a good neighbor to those of us in Grant Township. Neighbors of the proposed industrial site have been vocal about the negative impact on their lifestyles and properties.

Proximity to the Lawrence Municipal Airport is one of the reasons the developer gives in promoting this site. What is the specific benefit? The airport is not large enough for cargo carriers to stock the proposed warehouses. Are we talking about attracting a few more jetting CEOs?

This project is not a rose by any name. As it is actually adjacent to the Airport Motel, perhaps it could be more accurately identified in future articles as the Airport Motel Business park.
