6News video: Fire station gets new ‘Beacon’

The city’s newest fire station now has a new addition. The Lawrence Arts Commission unveiled a sculpture known as “Beacon” this afternoon at Fire Station 4.

Eric Smith, second from right, and his son, Mason, 7, inspect the sculpture Beacon unveiled Friday at the Fire and Medical Station 4, 2121 Wakarusa Drive. The sculpture, created by Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades of Actual Size Artworks in Staughton, Wis., was commissioned by the city of Lawrence at a cost of 8,000 as part of the city's Percent for Art program. The program dedicates up to 2 percent of the construction cost of public facilities and park land to public art. Others in attendance were unidentified.
