Outdoor Aquatic Center ready to help cool off

Lawrence’s Outdoor Aquatic Center opens for the summer today.

“The water is in, and all the systems are working great,” said Jimmy Gibbs, aquatics manager with the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department.

Gates open at 1 p.m. and will remain open until 8:45 p.m. seven days a week for the rest of the season. Morning lap swimming also will be available from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday through Aug. 24, but it won’t start until Tuesday.

The outdoor aquatic center, which is in Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, features two water slides, children’s play areas and concessions. The center also offers aquatic camps and swimming lessons.

The indoor aquatic center also will change to summer hours today. Lap swimming will be available from 5:15 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 9 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Saturdays; and 1 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Sundays. The waterslide and diving area will be available from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sundays.
