Auction aimed at low-income families

The Ballard Community Services organization will hold its fifth annual silent and live auction June 8 at Black Tie Affair, which is in a former theater at 2339 Iowa.

The auction, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will include an electric scooter, a balloon ride for two, and basketballs signed by Kansas University men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Ballard Community Services is a nonprofit organization that focuses on educating low-income children and providing financial assistance and other essentials to low-income families.

Dianne Ensminger, Ballard CEO, said most money raised by the auction will benefit the organization’s early-education program. She said the organization also needs money for financial assistance, especially with the recent hike in gasoline prices. Within the first week of this month, the organization ran out of money to help local low-income families, she said.

The auction is the only major fundraiser for the organization. She said last year the auction raised more than $30,000.

Anyone is invited to participate, and tickets can be purchased for $25 at the door or at Ballard Center, 708 Elm St.
