Hospital honored for stroke patient care

Kansas University Hospital’s care for stroke patients has won recognition from the American Stroke Association.

The group recently gave KU Hospital its Annual Performance Achievement Award, given to hospitals that comply for 12 consecutive months with a set of stroke-treatment practices known as the “Get With the Guidelines” program. The program includes guidelines for treating strokes after they occur and for educating patients about how to prevent another stroke.

According to the American Stroke Association, about 700,000 people suffer a stroke each year. Of those, 500,000 are first-time strokes and 200,000 are recurrent. Of stroke survivors, 22 percent of men and 25 percent of women die within a year.

John Terry, director of the stroke program at KU Hospital, said the number of stroke patients is expected to increase in coming years, in part because of the aging population.

The association will recognize KU Hospital during a ceremony Wednesday at the KU School of Nursing.
