Wichita ? Free State High senior Nick Burkart shot an 80 in tough conditions Monday to tie for 18th place and earn a medal at the Class 6A state boys golf tournament at Reflection Ridge Golf Club.

“He’s a three-time state qualifier, and finally he gets a medal out of it. It’s a good way to end his high school career,” said Free State coach Matt Gudenkauf.

Fellow senior Allen Burkart shot an 83 for the Firebirds, who did not qualify as a team for this year’s event.

Olathe South’s Jordan Smith won the individual title with a 73, leading the Falcons to the team title with 317 strokes.

With the season now drawn to a close, Gudenkauf’s immediate thought turned to the five seniors who carried his team this spring.

“All five are just outstanding young men. I’m sorry to see them go,” Gudenkauf said. “It’s going to be hard-pressed to replace those five young men.”
