Budget priorities

To the editor:

How many thousands of dollars are expected to be saved by limiting the hours and number of days that the pool will be available to our children?

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars can be saved by eliminating one roundabout?

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars can be saved by eliminating consultants?

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent for Eagle Bend? (Don’t forget to calculate the retail value of the city water the course uses free of charge.)

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent litigating against the second Wal-Mart we will be getting?

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars extra will be required to staff and maintain a new $30 million library?

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars could be saved by converting to compact fluorescent lighting in public spaces?

This list could easily be doubled or tripled.

I think what is going on is a decision to make sure the average citizen feels the pain of a 3 percent shortfall in “projected” revenue collection. It is a question of priorities, what will be protected and what will be cut.

I would prefer to forgo a roundabout and some consultants so we could reduce the price of our children’s admission to the pool.
