‘Today’ to feature KU butterfly expert

A Kansas University biology professor was interviewed for a segment expected to air this morning on NBC’s “Today” show.

Orley “Chip” Taylor, director of KU’s Monarch Watch program, said he was one of several researchers interviewed earlier this year near Cerro Pelon and Sierra Chincua, Mexico, where a film crew from the show was shooting footage of butterflies preparing for their northward migration.

The segment on butterflies will be part of a weeklong series called “Today Goes Wild.”

On a related note, Taylor said Monarch Watch still has hundreds of butterfly-friendly plants available to the public at Foley Hall on West Campus for a suggested donation of $1 to $3. The plants are leftovers from a weekend open house and fundraiser, and they will be for sale from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.
