Taxable venture

To the editor:

The article “Henrickson to earn $635,000” (Journal-World, May 11) makes one point that would be easy to overlook. This high salary is being paid by Kansas Athletics Inc., not by Kansas University. It is this same, separate corporation that decided to move the KU-Missouri football game to Kansas City, Mo., because it was good for its business. This is a corporation that claims affiliation with the university when it suits it, namely to get tax exemptions, but acts as a private business whenever it really wants to do something.

When will federal, state and local officials recognize this commercial business for what it is and tax it accordingly? With the athletic corporation’s revenues in excess of $40 million, the Lawrence sales tax of 7.3 percent would generate tax revenues of nearly $3 million per year. Who says the city cannot afford a new library!
