LHS, Free State paired in opening round of Class 6A regional softball

City fans are in for a good news/bad news scenario this week regarding the regional round of the spring high school sports postseason.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced Saturday its seedings and brackets for baseball, softball and girls soccer, the latter two featuring city showdowns in the opening round.

The Free State High softball team (16-3) earned a No. 2 seed and will play host to No. 7 Lawrence High (4-16) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The winner will play later that afternoon against the Washburn Rural-Junction City winner for the right to advance to this year’s Class 6A state tournament in Wichita.

A second Free State-LHS matchup will take place Tuesday on the soccer pitch when the fourth-seeded Firebirds (5-8-2) welcome the fifth-seeded Lions (4-8-2) in a 5 p.m. contest, again guaranteeing a city team will advance in the postseason.

The possibility also remains that one of the city baseball squads will advance to this year’s 6A state baseball tournament at the other’s expense. Fourth-seeded LHS (11-8) will meet fifth-seeded Washburn Rural (9-9) on Thursday in a 2 p.m. contest on the Free State field, followed by a 4:30 clash between top-seeded Firebirds (14-4) and eighth-seeded Leavenworth (2-15). The winners in those two games will play at 7 p.m. for the lone state berth.

LHS and Free State will compete in Monday’s 6A regional boys golf tournament at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill, and all four city track teams will participate in Friday’s 6A regional at Olathe North.
