Firms to compete in Sertoma cookoff

Ten teams will compete for awards and taste buds during the Sertoma Club’s annual Corporate Cookoff & Mixer, to be conducted from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Broken Arrow Park, east of 29th and Louisiana streets.

This year’s entrants: CEK Insurance, Central National Bank, Chavez Restoration, Clark Inspection Service, CornerBank, Douglas County Bank, Factory Direct Appliance & Custom Wood Products, Harbor House Memory Care Residence, Keller & Associates, and Wiklund, Peterson Krische & Van Horn, DDS.

The event is described as a light-hearted competition, with teams grilling hamburgers, brats and hot dogs. Four judges – state Sen. Marci Francisco, D-Lawrence; Mayor Sue Hack; Junior Brubeck, owner of Jim Clark Motors; and Chris Merrill, of KLZR and KLWN radio – will decide which team wins “Best Food” and which one wins “Best Booth.”

People paying $5 to attend and sample the food will vote for the winner of the “People’s Choice” award.

Money generated by the event goes to finance Sertoma’s civic activities in Lawrence, including the Schiefelbusch Communication Camp for speech and hearing-challenged youth.
