Sculpture invites prayer as part of art exhibit

The southwest corner of Seventh and Massachusetts streets has a new piece of art: a prayer station.

City crews recently installed the sculpture at the corner as part of the city’s annual Downtown Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. The sculpture looks like a partial telephone booth that includes signage encouraging people to pray. It also includes a kneeling pad.

The sculpture includes a sign that says “This device exists to facilitate and control prayer in public spaces. Improper use may result in a penalty or fine.”

Assistant City Manager Debbie Van Saun said the booth was one of the works selected by the judges for the sculpture show, and was intended to be viewed as a piece of art. City crews began installing sculptures this week.
