Local footballers garner honors

? Lawrence High’s Nick DeBiasse and Free State High’s Andy Petz were among 11 high school seniors honored as scholar-athletes by the Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation on Thursday.

DeBiasse was a three-year letterman, a two-time All-Sunflower League first teamer, two-time All-Metro pick and an all-stater. DeBiasse also has a 4.0 grade-point average and ranks No. 1 among a class of 426 students.

Petz was a three-year letterman, a first-team All Sunflower League linebacker and an honorable mention all-state selection. He carries a 4.0 GPA and is a Kansas Honor Scholar.

Among the other honorees was Chad Hays of Uniontown, whose parents, Frank and Patty Hays, live in Lawrence.

Hays was a first-team All-Three Rivers League pick at quarterback and defensive back. He was also named to the Wichita Eagle’s 33-man all-classes all-state team. Hays also maintains a 4.0 grade-point average.

Former Kansas State coach Bill Snyder and former Kansas University coach Don Fambrough spoke at the recognition dinner Thursday at KSU Stadium.
