? Free State High stretched its softball winning streak to eight with a pair of shutout victories Friday over Shawnee Mission South.

Catherine Smith pitched a one-hitter in the opening-game 13-0 victory, and Megan Smith fired a one-hitter as Free State won the nightcap, 10-0.

“SM South is pretty young,” Free State coach Pam Pine said. “Catherine pitched pretty well, and we had solid defense, but our bats were really explosive.”

The Firebirds (15-1 overall, 9-0 Sunflower League) totaled 15 hits in the opener, including two doubles by Maggie Mull and a double and triple by Livi Abney.

Aleese Kopf had a pair of doubles for the Firebirds in the second game.
