Fire sends 2 to hospital

A fire at Berry Plastics in North Lawrence sent two employees to Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Friday evening.

Firefighters were called to respond to a machine fire at the plastics manufacturer early Friday evening.

When they arrived, employees had already put out the fire.

About 7:45 p.m., medical crews were called back to the plant to tend to two employees.

The nature of their injuries was unclear Friday night but the workers were still in the hospital.

Rob Kort, battalion chief for Lawrence Douglas County Fire & Medical, said he saw little if any smoke at the plant when he arrived.

Investigators were still looking into the cause of the fire.

The plant was operating late Friday.
