Event to celebrate Girl Scout history

An event today will celebrate a collection of historical papers and materials from a local Girl Scout troop that has been donated to Kansas University’s libraries.

The collection includes records, memorabilia and correspondence from Mariner Girl Scout Troop 660, as well as records pertaining to the creation of Hidden Valley, a Girl Scout camp and wilderness area near Bob Billings Parkway and Kasold Drive.

The late Mariana Remple, a longtime Girl Scout leader in Lawrence, compiled most of the collection and will be honored along with her family members and other scouting leaders at today’s event, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Spencer Research Library.

“This collection is an incredibly rich resource that documents the activities of Girl Scouts participants and leaders for more than 50 years,” Sherry Williams, curator of the Kansas Collection at KU Libraries, said in a prepared statement.
