12-year sentence given for burglary, attack

A Douglas County judge on Thursday ordered a Lawrence man to spend nearly 12 years in prison for breaking into the home of a neighbor and attacking him. The incident occurred in September 2005.

Judge Robert Fairchild sentenced Louis Galloway, 44, to serve 130 months for aggravated burglary and 12 months for aggravated battery. Fairchild also ordered Galloway to pay the victim, Michael Miller, $1,482 in restitution for a hospital bill.

“You all going to give me a job so I can pay the (restitution)?” Galloway asked.

“I understand. Sentence is passed,” Fairchild said.

Galloway has 10 days to file an appeal.

After the sentencing, Assistant District Attorney Brandon Jones moved to dismiss another case pending against Galloway involving criminal threat charges.

Galloway was originally supposed to be tried in December in Miller’s case, but Miller, 48, was shot and wounded in Ottawa. Four people – not Galloway – have been charged in Franklin County; their cases are pending.
