— Caleb Gress and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Free State High baseball team remained unbeaten Wednesday with a 6-2 victory against Shawnee Mission North in the Firebirds' Sunflower League opener.

Gress earned the win, tossing 42â3 innings and allowing one run on two hits, striking out two.

"We threw really well and had solid defense behind our pitchers," said Free State coach Mike Hill. "I thought Caleb took another step forward and was gutty."
