Free State ties, 0-0, in ‘hard-fought’ game

? Free State High opened its girls soccer season Tuesday with a 0-0 tie against Shawnee Heights.

“It was an extremely hard fought game,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said, “and we played with great effort and passion throughout against a quality opponent.

Megan Hrenchir secured the shutout in goal for Free State, and was aided by the Firebirds’ back line of Lucca Wang, Jenni Brooks, Clare Robinson, and Amanda Vervynck.

The Firebirds’ home opener is 4 p.m. Thursday against Shawnee Mission West, which finished second in the Class 6A state the last two years.
