Former KU football player sentenced

A former Kansas University football player will spend at least 48 hours in Douglas County Jail for part of his sentence following a Feb. 22 battery conviction.

Bruce Ringwood, who was dismissed from the football team April 1, 2006, was given a six-month suspended jail sentence, 12 months of probation and 40 hours of community service. He also must pay more than $1,200 of restitution, complete anger management classes and spend 48 hours in jail at a time of his choosing.

Ringwood was sentenced Tuesday afternoon in Douglas County Court by Judge Stephen Six.

Ringwood’s battery conviction stems from a March 17, 2006, fight with Marcus Ford, a roommate.

Ford spoke at the sentencing and urged the judge to sentence Ringwood to anger management classes given his history of fighting. For example, Ringwood was arrested in August 2005 in an altercation with a fan at a Kenny Chesney concert in Kansas City, Mo.

“Bruce sees the world as his punching bag,” Ford said in court.

Ringwood maintained he acted in self-defense in the fight with Ford.

Ringwood now attends Washburn University and plays for its football team.
