Bike race to close part of West Campus on Sunday

Don’t try to drive through the southern part of Kansas University’s West Campus on Sunday morning – it will be closed for the 2007 Jayhawk Cycling Classic.

Organizers are expecting about 150 collegiate racers from Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa to attend the race, sponsored by the KU Cycling Club.

Traffic will be partially blocked on West Campus south of 19th Street between 8 a.m. and noon Sunday for the bicycle race, according to Capt. Mark Witt of KU’s Public Safety Office.

Streets that will be closed during the race will be Constant Drive from 19th to 21st streets and the entire loop of Becker Drive, Witt said.

Drivers will be able to get through temporarily between the three scheduled heats, Witt said. However, he said he couldn’t predict when or how long those breaks would be.

Sunday’s bicycle race is one of three events for the cycling club this weekend. Today, cyclists will compete in road race and a 10-mile team time trial.

David McLeod, a KU team member, said Sunday’s fast-lap races would be the most entertaining for spectators.
