’15 seconds’ campaign to raise HIV awareness
A fan favorite who was famously kicked off “American Idol” will visit Lawrence next week as part of an event to raise awareness of HIV.
Frenchie Davis, who got the boot from “Idol” in 2003 after it was revealed she’d posed for an adult Web site, will perform Friday night at Hashinger theater in Hashinger residence hall on Kansas University’s campus. The event will culminate a weeklong campaign to educate students about HIV. The campaign – dubbed “15 seconds” to remind people of the statistic that someone under age 25 contracts HIV every 15 seconds – has been organized by two KU students who say they didn’t think enough was happening on campus to raise people’s awareness of the virus.
“What we’re hoping is to reach different types of students with the variety of events we have and hopefully get them to start thinking about HIV,” said Cody Charles, a graduate student in higher education from Houston. “We want students to become more aware and know that the growing population that’s being hit with this disease are people like them – people under the age of 25.”
Another goal of the event, Charles said, is to raise money for the Douglas County AIDS Project so that it can offer free HIV testing.
Charles is co-chairman of the campaign, along with Tyrone Brown, a senior from Topeka majoring in accounting.
Davis agreed to come to Lawrence after Charles contacted her through the social-networking Web site MySpace.com. She will perform at 8 p.m. Friday and talk about her experiences in the Broadway production of “Rent,” which includes HIV as a central theme.
Other events:
¢ Monday: Information stations set up at the Kansas Union, Wescoe Hall and on-campus dining halls.
¢ Tuesday: Screening of the movie “Philadelphia” at 7 p.m. at Woodruff Auditorium, with a discussion afterward led by Lawrence filmmaker Kevin Willmott, a KU associate professor of theater and film.
¢ Wednesday: Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will be passing out information about HIV and taking donations on Wescoe Beach.
¢ Thursday: Panel discussion on HIV and concert by Jus Rhyme, a participant on the “White Rapper” show on VH1, 6 p.m. at Hashinger theater.
¢ Saturday: Poker tournament, 4 p.m. in the McCollum Hall lobby.
The event costs about $8,000, Charles said, and is sponsored by a dozen organizations, including the Association of University Residence Halls and the NAACP.
